In Vol. II, Choral Masterworks from The Sistine Chapel, the psalm "Miserere mei Deus" is elegantly performed. Since the 1630's, Gregorio Allegri's famous setting has been sung at dawn during Holy Week, while the Pope kneels in prayer in the solemn candlelit atmosphere of the Sistine Chapel. This contemporary version, recorded in the grandeur of Osnabruck Cathedral, adds material by Vladimir Ivanoff to the angelic a capella harmonies of the Osnabruck Youth Choir. Add the sweetest brass tones of the cornetto (a small, mellow trumpet), and the mysterious beauty of this sacred classic is recreated.
In Vol. III, Choral Masterworks from Russia and Beyond, great mixed choirs of earthy and ethereal voices join in ardent prayers of devotion and transcendent invocations of "Amen" and "Alleluia!" The sublime tradition of Russian sacred choral music began with Byzantine chants and evolved to full harmonic magnificence in the late 19th century. This collection of a capella masterworks by Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov, Komitas, Bach and others "sets the soul searching beyond worldly cares."
